About dmx.berlin

dmx.berlin is the personal website of Jörg Richter, software developer, former CTO of the (now defunct) DeepaMehta GmbH and DMX Systems UG companies. He lives and works, and was born, in Berlin. All his software is Open Source.

After abandoning his LEGO bricks Jörg discovered the computer as the ultimate tool for endless puzzles. That was 1981 when he learned Z80 assembler on a Micro-Professor MPF-I. A year later he did Pac Man and Centipede clones on his ZX Spectrum. Whilst at high school, he created MIDI sound editors for Roland keyboards and sold them through (now defunct) G.C.Geerdes and Softarts. After studying computer science and linguistics at TU Berlin, he worked at Claassen & Friends and built, in the late 90s, artfacts.net, which became one of the largest websites about contemporary arts. At 2000 he was employed at Staps Mindware when Knowledge Management was the thing. Matthias Staps set him on a mission: "Do research about Knowledge Management, and this is how the UI should look like", he showed him a Mind Map. This was the birth of the DeepaMehta project. After the company collapsed, Mathias allowed him to continue the project as Open Source. Since then the quest of building an adequate user interface for knowledge workers never left him. Since 2025 a complete rewrite, version 6, is on the way.

Besides software development Jörg's passion is music. In the 80s he grew up with the punk and new wave records of his sister. In the late 80s he started experimenting with a Roland D-10 synthesizer, bought from a small inheritance from his grandmother. In the early 90s he did a duo with a former high school buddy. Both efforts are now documented at Bandcamp as Kind aus Blech and Phil & Jörg respectively. Since the 2000's he was regular guest DJ at MissVergnügen's Strange Music for Strange People parties at Eschschloraque. Today he's curating 2 music streams, one is Essential Madness Radio, featuring experimental 80s DIY music, the other is Bhakta Radio, featuring meditative music.
